Five-time champion Novak Djokovic is No. 1 seed
MIAMI – World No. 1 Novak Djokoivc, fresh off his victory in the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, is the No. 1 seed in the 2016 Miami Open men’s singles main draw. The five-time champion will compete for his third consecutive Miami Open title and fourth ATP title of the 2016 season.
Two-time champion Andy Murray received the No. 2 seed followed by Roger Federer, who is making his return to the purple courts of Key Biscayne after not playing in last year’s event.
Defending Roland Garros champion, Stan Wawrinka, and four-time Miami Open finalist Rafael Nadal round out the top five seeds.
The draw ceremony, held at the Itaú Experience onsite at the Miami Open, was assisted by ATP player David Ferrer, who is the tournament’s No. 8 seed. He faces a potential quarterfinal showdown with Federer if both advance to that round. Djokovic drew No. 7 Tomas Berdych as his potential quarterfinal opponent. The quarterfinals could also see a matchup between Wawrinka and Nadal.
Juan Martin del Potro, who continues his comeback from wrist surgery drew fellow Argentine Guido Pella in the first round. The winner of that match will face Federer in the second round.
Last night the women’s singles main draw was announced at the Lacoste Boutique on Lincoln Road in South Beach. WTA players Dominika Cibulkova and Christina McHale assisted with the ceremony. Three-time defending champion Serena Williams is the No. 1 seed for a tournament-record seventh time. Angelique Kerber, Agnieszka Radwanska, Garbine Muguruza, and Simona Halep were seeds No. 2-5, respectively.
