As the field narrows, the second round of women’s singles play at the Miami Open came to a close today. Headlined by Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep and Madison Keys, a number of female stars took to the courts.

In the upset of the day, Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Indian Wells winner Elena Vesnina 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Vesnina was ranked 581 spots higher than Tomljanovic in world standings.

Due to rain delays Thursday, a few postponed matches finshed as well.

Here are some key results:

(Thursday’s postponed matches)
In a thrilling comeback, world No. 6 Garbine Muguruza defeated American Christina McHale 0-6, 7-6, 6-4. Before play was suspended, McHale had a 6-0, 3-2 lead.
Muguruza’s second-round opponent, Shuai Zhang, is 1-0 against the Spaniard in career play.

(Friday’s matches)
World No. 1 Kerber, world No. 5 Halep and world No. 7 Svetlana Kuznetsova won their openers.
America’s Shelby Rogers Defeated Russia’s Daria Kasatkina.
Japanese qualifier Risa Ozaki upset world No. 21 Kiki Bertens, Netherlands.
In an Australian clash, Samantha Stosur beat Ashleigh Barty.
American Taylor Townsend upset Italy’s Roberta Vinci. Vinci was ranked 81 spots ahead of Townsend. However, Townsend was defeated in doubles play by a duo featuring Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
American and world No. 9 Madison Keys took care of business in her first match. As did Venus Williams.
After defeating Olympic gold holder Monica Puig, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea defeated world No. 25 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.
