Former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone bowed out of the 2014 Sony Open Tennis tournament in the women’s first round Tuesday as a result of a 6-4, 6-2 to Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova. Shvedova has enjoyed previous success at Key Biscayne, reaching the fourth round in 2010.
Jack Sock cruised through the second round of qualifying and earned a spot in the Sony Open men’s draw after beating Victor Estrella Burgos, 6-3, 6-4. Sock, 21, has advanced to the first round for the second time in four years at Crandon Park.
In women’s first-round action, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands lost to Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3; Tsvetana Pironkova topped Galina Voskoboeva in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5; Kurumi Nara held off Annika Beck 7-6 (2), 6-4; and Caroline Garcia beat Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3, 7-5.
Puerto Rican standout Monica Puig advanced to the second round with a 6-1, 7-6 (7) victory over Magdalena Rybarikova. Other first round results, include Romina Oprandi defeated Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 6-4; Casey Dellacqua beat Stefanie Voegele 6-3, 6-2. Varvara Lepchenko defeated Yanina Wickmayer 7-5, 6-1; ; Chanelle Scheepers swept Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-3, 6-0.
In men’s qualifying, Andrey Golubev beat Damir Dzumhur, 6-4, 6-2; Thiemo De Bakker held off Evgeny Donskoy 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5); Jimmy Wang beat Daniel Evans 6-4, 6-2; Paul-Henri Mathieu outlasted Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1; Malek Jaziri upset Benjamin Becker 3-6, 6-3, 6-2; Alex Bogomolov topped Filip Krajinovic 6-1, 6-1; and Lukas Lacko won in straight sets over Dusan Lajovic, 6-3, 6-2.
The rest of the men’s qualifying on Tuesday included American Steve Johnson defeating fellow American Alex Kuznetsov 6-3, 6-3; Aljaz Bedene beat Tobias Kamke 6-3, 1-6, 6-4; David Goffin rallied to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 2-6, 6-4, 6-1; Dominic Thiem defeated Peter Polansky 6-3, 7-5.
In women’s qualifying, Kiki Bertens upset Jana Cepelova 6-4, 6-4; Olga Govortsova beat Julia Goerges 7-6 (3), 6-2; Donna Vekic topped Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-1; Shahar Peer beat Luksika Kumkhum 6-2, 6-1; Patricia Mayr-Achleitner held off Nastassja Burnett 6-1, 5-7, 6-2; Estrella Cabeza Candela defeated Petra Cetkovska in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4; and Katarzyna Piter beat Irina Khromacheva (retired), 2-6, 7-5, 4-3.
In the late afternoon, Virginie Razzano came from behind to beat Su-Wei Hsieh 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, while American Coco Vandeweghe beat Alison Sharon Fichman 6-4, 6-3 and Nadiya Kichenok beat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
