As the field narrows, the women’s draw at the 2017 Miami Open wrapped up its second round of play. Highlighting the day’s action were wins by Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep and Madison Keys.
The upset of the day came in doubles play when Andreja Klepac and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez defeated No. 1 doubles player Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova 6-4, 6-1.
World No. 11 Johanna Konta, Britain, kicked off the day’s action with a win against France’s Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-0. In 2016, Konta reached the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, which was also her debut at the event.
In an afternoon showdown, Kerber beat American Shelby Rogers 6-4, 7-5. Rogers was one of five American women to reach the third round, in addition to Taylor Townsend, Madison Keys, Venus Williams and Mattek-Sands, but just two of them will advance to the fourth round.
Mattek-Sands booked her ticket with a win over Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and so did Venus Williams, who defeated Romanian qualifier Patricia Maria Tig 6-3, 6-0.
Madison Keys was upset by Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena 7-5, 7-5, while Taylor Townsend was defeated by Indian Wells runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Kuznetsova also won in doubles play just hours later against a duo featuring American Raquel Atawo. In another doubles match, a Russian team with Indian Wells winner Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova secured a 6-0, 6-2 win.
In the evening session, world No. 5 Simona Halep defeated Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 6-0.
